Nowhere Place
MASS ALEXANDRIA - 2012 - CURATED BY WAEL SHAWKY
In 2012, my heightened awareness of the intrinsic significance and worth of materials was deepen during my collaboration with the esteemed American artist, Theaster Gates, on his "Huguenot House" endeavor, conceived in conjunction with DOCUMENTA (13).
In the context of this site-specific piece, an inoperative elevator shaft was reconfigured dramatically. A different plane of existence, what was a once-abandoned structure became charged with an invisible presence, marked by the relation of light and fluidic movement. With the naturalized and amplified acoustic space of the machinery of the elevator, the redescription turned the shaft into an erstwhile overlooked presence, now possessing its own distinct presence, luminosity, and purpose.
